STARTS THE INTERVENTIONS OF THE 6TH EDITION OF MADRID ABIERTO

On the 12th of November starts the interventions of the 6th edition of Madrid Abierto with the project Hucha de deseos: ¡Todos somos un barrio, movilízate! ofSusanne Bosch.

This art project serves as a model to empower people. It offers a creative platform that allows people to work together, to develop a collaborative spirit and inclusion. The art project combines an aesthetic appearance with a meaningful public debate.

Every banknote carries a trade value, but also a potential future value (saving for the next holidays, for the desired car...). Everyone carries an unused potential, an idea in mind, an observation, an untold story or observation, unused old coins in a drawer at home. This public art project seeks to collect as many of these little individual potentials as possible. The art project brings them together to transform them into projects and outcomes in the real world.

More than 136 millions of Peseta coins and 159 millions of Peseta banknotes remain in peoples private property. More than 1.776 million of Euros in Pesetas! Hucha de deseos: ¡Todos somos un barrio, movilízate! will collect the Peseta coins and banknotes in Plaza Puerta de Moros (square Carrera de San Francisco), La Latina neighborhood from the next 12th of November until the 20th of February of 2010.

URBAN BUDDY SCHEME. SEMINAR AND MEETING.

From the 5th to the 8th of February 2009, the seminar and meeting entitled Urban Buddy Scheme, directed by Cecilia Andersson, curator of Madrid Abierto 2009-2010, will be held at La Casa Encendida (Ronda de Valencia, nº2).

The city of Madrid is growing in an unprecedented pace. Multi disciplinary initiatives are engaged in processes that formulate new possible relationships with the city and its inhabitants, this while revealing complex layers of information. Activities that aim to envision possible futures, beyond the current construction crisis, continue with impressive strength.

This edition of Madrid Abierto sets out to investigate the potentials of collaborative socio-cultural and politically engaged work and how such work may perform as catalysts for change in the city. We will also try to activate processes that integrate new bodies of knowledge into the already existing.

Urban Buddy Scheme is built around the presentations by artists and architects involved in some of the existing activities carried out in the city. The seminar aims to merge such practices and concerns with those of the invited participants for Madrid Abierto 2009-10. As much as Urban Buddy Scheme is envisioned as an opportunity to exchange information, it is also meant to serve as a social hub for activities and networks.

ARTISTS SELECTED MADRID ABIERTO 2009-2010

For its sixth edition MADRID ABIERTO has received 587 proposals (508 for the general event, 16 for Casa de América, 16 for Círculo de Bellas Artes and 47 for sonorous art) from 769 artists from all over the world. The curator, Cecilia Andersson, has selected the following artists: Laurence Bonvin, Susanne Bosch, Lisa Cheung, Iñaki Larrimbe, Josep Maria Martín, Jean-François Prost, Gustavo Romano and Pablo Valbuena, together with the guests Lara Almárcegui, Teddy Cruz and Apolonija Sustersic+ Meike Schalk and the façade of the Círculo de Bellas Artes project has been declared deserted.

This edition of Madrid Abierto will be dedicated to emerging practices that critically engage with the urban environment. Madrid Abierto 2009-2010 aim to include a wide variety of practitioners and art forms that establish their strengths in an expanded role, and that work in the social realm of art practice and audience participation. The idea is to produce and show work that connect various disciplines and that opens up for collaborations between, for example, artists, architects, designers, computer programmers, social scientists and urban planners.

For cities to thrive, to be communicative and alive, and to function as catalysers of public life, it is necessary to stimulate civic participation and community involvement. Given the current framework, where society often fail to negotiate some of the most immediate challenges, how can pooling resources such as the ones found in interdisciplinary groups, develop alternative work methods? How can inertia and nostalgia be substituted by visionary and inspiring tools that act as catalysts for change?

The current edition is held in the course of 2009 and 2010. On the 5th and 6th of February 2009 the round tables on public art will be held in La Casa Encendida in Madrid, together with the presentation of the artists. The preparatory meeting for the projects, in the format of open workshop, will be held on the days following the round tables. Both the artistic interventions and the transmission of the selected pieces in the categories of sonorous and audiovisual art will be held in February 2010.

In the category of sonorous art, the pieces from Sarah Boothroyd, Manuel Calurano/Anna Raimondo, Yves Coussement, Javier Diez-Ena, Wade Matthews, Annemarie Steinvoort, Matthew Verdon, Hernani Villaseñor and Gloria Zein have been selected. In collaboration with Centro Cultural Montehermoso of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Fundación Rodríguez, the programme is rounded off with the audiovisual work of Fausto Grossi, Menosmegas, Izibene Oñederra, Logela, Iván Argote, David Elgea, Furallefalle,Salvatore Tutti and Iñaki López, selected in the 9th edition of TV Interventions, together with the work of the artists selected in 2009.

This sixth edition is organised by the Asociación Cultural MADRID ABIERTO, with the sponsoring of the Altadis Foundation, the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Community of Madrid and the Arts Department of the City Council of Madrid, with the collaboration of Casa de América, Círculo de Bellas Artes, ARCO, the Telefónica Foundation, Casa Encendida, the Ministry of Culture, Radio 3 of RNE, Canal Metro and Rodríguez Foundation/Montehermoso Cultural Center. Continuing with the work of previous editions, RMS La Asociación has been responsible for the co-ordination (Marta de la Torriente, general coordinator) and the 451 team has developed the graphic image and the web page.
